7 Signs It's Time to Renovate Your Kitchen

18 August 2026

From swollen laminate to a kitchen that no longer fits how you actually cook — seven real signs it's worth getting a renovation quote.

1. Worktop or cabinet swelling near water

Laminate or chipboard cabinetry that's swollen, bubbled or delaminating near the sink or dishwasher is a sign moisture has gotten into the substrate — this doesn't reverse itself, and it usually gets worse. It's one of the clearest, least ambiguous signs we see when we visit a property for a first quote.

2. You've run out of storage and it shows

If your countertops are permanently covered in small appliances and everyday items because the cabinets simply can't hold them, that's usually not a clutter problem — it's a design problem from decades-old cabinetry that never accounted for how much a modern kitchen needs to store.

3. Appliances that were never meant to be there

A fridge or oven that doesn't quite fit its space, propped level with a shim, or standing where a cabinet clearly used to be, is a sign the kitchen has been patched around rather than properly updated at some point. It usually means the layout hasn't kept pace with what the household actually needs.

4. You're planning to sell or rent

A dated kitchen is consistently one of the biggest value detractors on a Costa del Sol listing, and one of the highest-return fixes before putting a property on the market — agents tell us kitchens are what buyers and tenants photograph first.

5. The layout fights how you actually cook

If two people can't be in the kitchen at once, or the fridge, hob and sink are arranged in a way that means constant backtracking, that's a layout problem no amount of cleaning or restyling fixes. It's usually the single biggest quality-of-life change a renovation delivers.

6. Cracked, chipped or permanently stained surfaces

A worktop with visible cracks, chips at the edges, or staining that no longer responds to cleaning has usually reached the end of what maintenance can fix — especially with older natural stone that was never sealed properly to begin with.

7. It simply doesn't match the rest of the home anymore

If you've updated flooring, lighting or furniture elsewhere in the property and the kitchen now looks visibly out of step, that mismatch tends to become more noticeable over time, not less. A kitchen renovation is often what finally makes a home feel finished.
