New Kitchen vs Renovation: Which Do You Need?

2 August 2026

Fitting a kitchen for the first time and replacing an old one are two different jobs. Here's how to tell which one you actually need, zone by zone.

Two different jobs, one factory

We get asked for both constantly, and the two are genuinely different projects. A renovation means an old kitchen comes out and a new one goes in — same footprint in most cases, existing plumbing and electrics to work around. A new kitchen means fitting cabinetry into a space that's never had one — a new-build handed over as a bare shell, an extension, or a room converted from something else. Both come out of the same factory in La Cala de Mijas, but the brief and the process start from different places.

Signs you need a renovation

If there's already a kitchen there — even a dated, tired one — you're renovating, not fitting new. That covers the vast majority of our work in older parts of Mijas Pueblo, Fuengirola's apartment blocks, and Marbella's old town, where an existing layout, existing plumbing, and often existing structural walls all shape what's possible.

Signs you need a new kitchen

If you've bought a new-build property with a bare kitchen space and rough plumbing points only, or you're converting a room that's never held a kitchen before, that's a new kitchen project. This comes up most in newer developments across Mijas, Fuengirola, Marbella, Benalmadena and Estepona, where developers increasingly leave the kitchen fit-out to the buyer.

Does the price differ?

Not hugely, but the factors are different. A renovation's cost is shaped mostly by materials and how much of the existing layout changes. A new kitchen's cost depends more on how much preparatory plumbing and electrical work is needed before cabinetry can go in — sometimes less overall since there's no demolition, sometimes more if the space needs wiring run in from scratch.
